Monday, January 11th starts Mouse Week on Orange Cat Blues! (NOM!) Stop by daily, subscribe, or get Wat's Noo? in your email to see mouse art of the day!
Two of my goals for Art of the Day are presenting a varied collection of interpretations of animals in art and experiencing the excitement of getting a little culture while I'm snowed in on a farm in South Dakota. That's all I will say about how exciting it was to find out Dean Russo is on Etsy.
It's the first Dog week of 2010 and I made it Pomeranian Week! Why poms? Not because I have any Pom art to sell, and not because they're such cute little puffball toy dogs that can either look like foxes or teddy bears depending on their furcuts, but because Loki's cousin Chewie is a pomeranian. See?
He's named after Chewbacca because that's what he looked like when he was born. He lived here about a month before he moved to Puerto Rico. Apparently he's become quite the dancer.
Monday is jewelry and sculpture day and I have to admit I didn't expect to find Pomeranian jewelry. Based on ear shape alone it's much more difficult to find specific dog breeds than cats, but I eventually found these little things and knew they were right for Pomeranian Monday.
The brass look gives the vintage art a little pop and the beads lend a symmetry of shape and color. Nicely done! This shop is a member of Etsy for Animals and Handmade for Hounds, both groups use their talents to help animals in need.
I choose Art of the Day solely on the basis of my personal feeling about it whether the artist is professional or a hobbyist. I picked this one because it's a good example of the fun that can be had with watercolor, but rightly so Kestutis Kasparavicius has illustrated over 40 picture books.
I love that Fudgie is made in a vintage 70's mold; that's probably what gives him his unique charm. That and the chocolatey goodness. He has a little curly tail, too, that you can see when you follow the link, and a cousin named Oatey. Kittredge candles is named for a cat, and as they make both candles and soap the proceeds from their cat soap (including Oatey) goes to a cat rescue called Feline Friends. It was difficult for me to choose between Fudgie and Oatey, but I thought I'd stick with the Valentine thing so here is Fudgie!
